Fernando Fernández Martín

Fernando Fernández Martín (born May 29, 1943 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife ) is a Spanish politician . Between 1987 and 1990 he was President of the Canary Islands , one of the Autonomous Communities of Spain. For the Spanish People's Party (PP) as a member of the European People's Party , he has been a member of the European Parliament since 1994 .

education

Fernando Fernández Martín graduated from Navarre with a degree in medicine and surgery in 1965 . In the following two years he received a diploma in neurology in Barcelona and Paris . From 1965 to 1968 Martín was a lecturer in neurology at the University of Navarra , and in 1968 he specialized in neurology and clinical neurophysiology at this university. He then was Assistant Professor of Medical Pathology at the University of San Cristóbal de La Laguna for ten years . In 1975 he obtained a doctorate in medicine (Dr. med.). He also became professor of neurology at the University of La Laguna in 1984 . From 1971 to 1999 Fernández Martín was the head of the neurological department at the University Clinic of the Canary Islands.

Political career

He began his political career in 1983 when he chaired the liberal CDS party of the Canary Islands, which he held until 1989. From 1983 to 1994 Martín was a member of the Parliament of the Canary Islands as an autonomous community. He was elected President of the Regional Government of the Canary Islands in 1987; he held this office until 1990. The Partido Popular (PP) parliamentary group appointed him from 1991 to 1994 as its chairman. From 1991 to 2004 he was a member of the regional executive committee of the Spanish People's Party (PP) of the Canary Islands. He was on the executive committee of the Spanish People's Party (PP) from 1994 to 1999. In 1994 he became a member of the Joint Parliamentary Assembly (ACP-EU), which lasted until 2004. From 1999 to 2001 Fernández Martín was Deputy Chairman of the Development Committee of the European Parliament . Immediately thereafter, he was Deputy Chairman of the European Parliament delegation for relations with South America - Mercosur until 2004 . In 2003 he was also appointed chairman of the ad hoc delegation of the European Parliament for Venezuela , and from 2004 he was also responsible for Bolivia . In 2007, the election observation delegation of the European Parliament gave Martín the task of observing various elections in Africa and Latin America.

Awards

Fernando Fernández Martín received the Collar de la Orden de las Islas Canarias and the medal of the Spanish Senate as well as other Spanish and foreign awards.
