Jeremiah Watkins Clapp
Jeremiah Watkins Clapp (born September 24, 1814 in Abingdon , Virginia , † September 5, 1898 in Memphis , Tennessee ) was an American lawyer and Confederate politician .
Career
Jeremiah Watkins Clapp was born in Washington County, Virginia , during the British-American War . Nothing is known about his youth. Eventually he moved to Mississippi and settled in Holly Springs ( Marshall County down). He studied law and practiced there after receiving his license as a lawyer in his own law firm. His nephew, Earl Clapp Bronaugh senior (1831-1899), who later became a judge, studied law there with him and was admitted to the bar in 1851. Clapp married Evalina Donoho Lucas (1824–1907) during that time. The couple had at least two children: Climmie Lucas (1844-1904) and Jeremiah Watkins junior (1852-1923). In the following years he worked as a judge. In 1861 he took part as a delegate to the Mississippi Secession Convention, where he voted for his state's secession. In November 1861 he was elected to the First Confederate Congress for the first constituency of Mississippi , where he served from February 18, 1862 to February 17, 1864. After the end of the Civil War , he sold his property, moved to Tennessee and settled in Memphis, Shelby County , where he died in 1898. He was buried there in Elmwood Cemetery .
