The Yermakov Island ( Ukrainian Острів Єрмаков / Ostriw Yermakov , Russian Остров Ермаков / Ostrow Yermakov ) is one of the largest river islands of the Danube in the Ukrainian part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve .

geography

The island is located in the Kilijaarm in the Kilija district of the Odessa Oblast on the Romanian border and in the Ramsar Kilijaarm area northwest of the city of Wylkowe . The island has an area of 23 km², is about 10 kilometers long and 3 kilometers, at the widest point almost four kilometers wide.

ecology

In the 1960s the island was diked and used as a pasture for cattle. The lack of flooding and overgrazing made the island almost an ecological desert.

After the dams were broken open in 2009 with the help of 60,000 € by the WWF , the cattle removed and the island renatured, the island is regularly inundated by the Danube floods, which ensures lush vegetation. Since then there have been pelicans, ducks, water fowl and swans again, in the swamps of the island turtles and snakes and in the forests wild boar, deer, raccoons, hares and foxes. Pike, carp and other valuable fish species thrive in the shallow water zones.

A complete restoration of the flora and fauna is planned for the future in order to make the island a center of ecological tourism.
