Jerry Léonide

Jerry Léonide (born May 3, 1984 in Mauritius ) is a French jazz pianist .

Léonide grew up in Mauritius, where he was introduced to music by his father, a guitarist, at the age of eight. Mostly autodidact , he received music lessons at the age of 17 so that he could play jazz better. The saxophonist Ernest Wiehe recognized his talent. In 2003 he moved to Paris, where Linley Marthe introduced him to the scene and where he studied with Emil Spányi . In 2012 he was one of the three finalists of the Nottingham International Jazz Piano Competition ; in the same year he received first prize at the national piano competition Concours Boris Vian . The following year he won first prize and the audience prize at the piano competition of the Montreux Jazz Festival .

2014 he put his group to which the flugelhorn player Sylvain Gontard, saxophonist Vincent Lê Quang and in the rhythm section Gino Chantoiseau and Jhonny Joseph belonged, his debut album, The Key at ACT before. In 2017 the album The Source of the Ocean followed , with Lionel Loueke and singer Linzy Bacbotte replacing Quang. He also belonged to the groups of Shanna Waterstown ( A Real Woman , 2010), The Kat ( Kat Is Back in Town ) and David Brito ( Tendencia Nueva , 2015, Dinner with Aldemaro , 2016).
