Jerry Nelson (puppeteer)

Jerry Nelson (born July 10, 1934 in Tulsa , Oklahoma , † August 23, 2012 ) was an American puppeteer .

Career

From 1965 Nelson appeared on the Jimmy Dean Show , in which he first worked with Jim Henson . When Frank Oz returned after a hiatus, Nelson had to leave the show.

Nelson worked on Sesame Street since 1970 . There he played the characters Graf Zahl (Count von Count), Lulatsch (Herry Monster), Sherlock Humbug (Sherlock Hemlock) and the great Mumpitz (The Amazing Mumford). Together with Richard Hunt and after his death in 1992 with David Rudman Nelson also played the two-headed monster (The Two Headed Monster).

In the Muppet Show , Nelson was primarily responsible for the musical roles. He played Kermit's nephew Robin, Floyd Pepper, Camilla the Chicken, as well as a large number of supporting characters. After Richard Hunt's death, he also took on the role of Statler, which he had already played in the pilot of the Muppet Show .

He played the main character Gobo Fraggle and Pa Gorg (face and voice only) and Marjorie, the omniscient garbage dump (Marjory the Trash Heap) in the series The Fraggles .

In 2004 Nelson withdrew from productions with characters from the Muppet Show for health reasons . In the Sesame Street but he was still with.

Private

Nelson had a daughter named Christine who suffered from cystic fibrosis . She had guest appearances on Sesame Street and the Muppets. In 1982 she succumbed to her illness.
