Osgan Efendi , born as Yervant Hagopi Voskan ( Armenian Երվանդ Հակոբի Ոսկան , * 1855 in Istanbul , † 1914 ) was an Ottoman painter, sculptor and lecturer of Armenian descent. In his time he was the only sculptor in the Ottoman Empire .

Life

Yervant Voskan was born in Istanbul as the son of Hagop Vosgan (1825-1907) and grandson of Voskan Gotogyan from Erzurum , who was a caster in the Imperial Mint. After Yervant received his primary education from his father, he attended the Armenian Catholic Makruhyan School in Beşiktaş . In 1866 he went to Venice to study at the Murad Raphaelian School. He began to teach sculpture on March 1, 1883 at the Mekteb-i Sanayi-i Nefise-i Şâhâne . At that time he was the first and only teacher of sculpture in the Ottoman Empire.

Together with Osman Hamdi Bey , Osgan Efendi carried out the first scientifically based archaeological research in the history of the Ottoman Empire. His research included the burial sanctuary at Nemrut Dağı ( Commagene ) in southeastern Anatolia . Osgan Efendi was the restorer of the Alexander sarcophagus . In 1908 he took leave of the academy, and died six years later.
