Jerzy Hulewicz (born June 4, 1886 in Kościanki , Powiat Słupecki , Greater Poland Voivodeship , German Empire ; † July 1, 1941 in Warsaw ) was a Polish writer , art theorist , painter and graphic artist of Expressionism .

Life

Jerzy von Hulewicz was the son of the large landowner Leon Hulewicz and his wife Helena born. Kaczkowski was born. He had three sisters: Katarzyna, Stanisława, Antonina and three brothers: Bohdan, Witold and Wacław.

He attended secondary school in Trzemeszno with his siblings . Because he was a member of a conspiratorial group of students, he was expelled from school. He was threatened with three years of military service in the Prussian army. His father applied for his son to be removed from the list of Prussian citizens and an Austro-Hungarian citizenship. Jerzy Hulewicz finished his school days in Lemberg and after graduating from high school he attended the philosophical faculty at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and at the same time studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow with Jan Stanisławski and Józef Unierzyski.

From 1907 to 1910 he studied further in Paris and Switzerland , and in 1913 in Munich .

In 1916 he founded the publishing company "Ostoja" (The Hort) with his brothers Bohdan and Witold in Posen . Since October 1, 1917, the bi-monthly publication "Zdrój" (The Source) has been published. He also founded the artist group "Bunt" (The Revolt) in 1918 , which existed until 1920.

In 1926 Jerzy Hulewicz settled in Warsaw. He worked as a painter and graphic artist of the Polish avant-garde, writer, essayist and art critic. He was friends with the left-wing writer Emil Zegadłowicz (1888–1941).

In Warsaw, which was occupied by the Germans, he published magazines underground. He died unexpectedly in Warsaw. Most of his works fell victim to the flames during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.
