Jerzy Jan Lerski ( pseudonym Jur ) (* 1917 in Lwów ; † 1992 in San Francisco ) was a Polish-American lawyer, political scientist and historian .

Life

Before the war, Lerski lived in Lwów , where he attended high school No. 2 and then studied law at the local university and foreign trade at the commercial college. During the German invasion of Poland, he fought as a Podchorąży (cadet) of the air defense in Brześć . After the Soviet attack, he was taken prisoner by the Soviets, but was able to escape and make his way into Lwów, which was now also occupied by the Soviets. There he was actively involved in organizing the anti-Soviet resistance. In view of the growing NKVD terrorism and because of the risk of arrest, he fled across the “ green border ” in December 1939, first to Hungary and then to France , where he joined the Polish armed forces . After the defeat of France, he and his unit were evacuated to Great Britain . From December 1941 he was the courier of the Polish government in exile and from December 1944 Secretary of the Prime Minister Tomasz Arciszewski .

After the war he stayed in London , then emigrated to the USA . He became Professor of History at the University of San Francisco , but also gave guest lectures as a political scientist and historian at universities in Pakistan , Japan and Sri Lanka . He was honored with the Order of Polonia Restituta (Officer) and Righteous Among the Nations .
