Aleksander Gieysztor (born July 17, 1916 in Moscow , † February 9, 1999 in Warsaw ) was a Polish medieval historian .

Life

Aleksander Gieysztor was born in Moscow, where his parents fled during the First World War . From 1921 he lived in Warsaw. In 1937 he completed his history studies at the University of Warsaw . In 1939 he took part in the events of World War II as an ensign in the reserve. Afterwards he worked underground in the news and propaganda office of the Polish Home Army . In 1942 he received his doctorate from the conspiratorial university. Since September 1945 he has been an adjunct at the Institute of History at Warsaw University, since 1949 associate professor and since 1960 full professor. Since January 1971 he took part in the reconstruction of the Warsaw Royal Castle , in 1991 he became its director. In 1975 he became a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences , from 1980 to 1983 and 1990 to 1992 he was its chairman. In 1984 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy . 1986 to 1992 he was chairman of the Warsaw Science Society .

From 1988 to 1990 he was a member and since 1990 deputy chairman of the Council for the Preservation of Remembrance of Struggle and Martyrdom .

In 1989 he took part in the round table talks.

In 1994 he was one of the co-founders of the Humanistic Academy in Pułtusk , which has been named after him since 2002.

He published about 500 treatises and books.

His students included u. a. the historian and politician Karol Modzelewski .

Awards

In 1976 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Paris , in 1990 from the University of Poznan , in 1996 from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, and in 1997 from the Catholic University of Lublin .

Aleksander Gieysztor was a. a. awarded the Polish Order of the White Eagle , the Federal Cross of Merit , the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the French Legion of Honor.

Since 1999, the Professor Aleksander Gieysztor Prize, donated by the Leopold Kronenberg Foundation , has been awarded to people who have earned the Polish cultural heritage.
