Jerzy Rayski (born April 6, 1917 in Warsaw , † October 14, 1993 in Krakow ) was a Polish physicist and professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow .

Rayski first studied medicine and then physics in Krakow. First during the Second World War at the Underground University in Cracow with Jan Weyssenhoff , whose assistant he was in 1945/46. He then was senior assistant to Wojciech Rubinowicz at the University of Warsaw , where he received his doctorate in 1947 (On the divergence problem in the theory of quantized fields). From May 1948 to April 1949 he was on a scholarship in Zurich with Wolfgang Pauli . He then went to the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń , where he set up a research group for quantum field theory with Jan Rzewuski, completed his habilitation in 1950 (On simultaneous interactions of several fields and the self energy problem) and became a professor in 1954. From 1957 he was at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow with a full professorship from 1958. A year later he was head of the Institute for Theoretical Physics and from 1978 until his retirement in 1987 head of the department of quantum field theory. He was twice Dean of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.

He dealt mainly with elementary particle physics and quantum field theory and worked in the 1940s with Wolfgang Pauli in Zurich on regularization of quantum field theories (as did Felix Villars , Res Jost , Joaquin Mazdak Luttinger at the same time). He also worked on Kaluza Klein theories and quantization of non-local fields and dealt with the philosophy of science.
