Jesús Fructuoso Contreras (born January 20, 1866 in Aguascalientes , † July 13, 1902 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican sculptor.

biography

Fructuoso went to Mexico City in 1880 and studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes and learned, among other things, in the sculptor's workshop of Miguel Noreña . At the XXI. Exhibition of the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, he received the first prize for sculpture and a grant for Paris . There he learned art bronze foundry from a certain Mr. Gagnot in the foundry "Thiébaut Frères" and stone carving from an architect named Colibert . After returning to his home country, he founded the “Fundición Artística Mexicana” ( Spanish for Mexican art foundry ) in Mexico City in 1892 . In 1898 he was appointed by the Mexican chief representative for fine arts to participate in the 1900 World's Fair in Paris . With his sculpture “Malgré” he won first prize, the Legion of Honor Cross, and was congratulated by Auguste Rodin . In 1886 he helped Noreña with the casting of his Cuauhtémoc monument and was commissioned by the Coahuila government to produce an equestrian statue of General Ignacio Zaragoza . Fructuoso became head of the foundry workshop at the Escuela Nacional de Artes y Oficios , was the founding president of the Ateneo Mexicano Literario y Artístico in 1892 , and in 1901 inspector for public monuments and interim inspector for fine and industrial arts. He later lost his right leg due to cancer.
