Jesse Root

Jesse Root (born December 28, 1736 in Coventry , Connecticut Colony , †  March 29, 1822 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1778 and 1782 he was a delegate for Connecticut in the Continental Congress .

Career

Jesse Root graduated from Princeton College in 1756 . He studied theology and worked as a preacher from 1758 to 1763. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1763, he began to work in this profession in Hartford . In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement and was a member of the Connecticut Security Committee and the State Militia. During the Revolutionary War he rose to the position of adjutant general of the Connecticut units. Between 1778 and 1782 he represented his state in the Continental Congress and from 1785 to 1789 he was prosecutor. In 1789, Root became a judge in his state's Superior Court . Between 1796 and 1807 he was Chief Justice of this court. He was then a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1807 to 1809 . In 1818 he took part as a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state. He died on March 29, 1822 in his hometown of Coventry.
