John Rogers (politician, 1723)

John Rogers (born 1723 in Annapolis , Maryland Province , †  September 23, 1789 in Prince George's County , Maryland ) was an American politician . In 1775 and 1776 he was a delegate for Maryland to the Continental Congress .

Career

John Rogers received a good education. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. He served on the Maryland Security Committee in 1774 and 1775. He also sat in the Provincial Congress there between 1774 and 1776. He was also a member of the local militia, where he achieved the rank of second major . In 1775 he also became a curator of the Lower Marlboro Academy . From 1775 to 1776 he represented Maryland in the Continental Congress. The United States' Declaration of Independence was adopted there in 1776 . Also in 1776, Rogers became a judge on the Court of Admiralty . In February 1777 he was a member of the Maryland State Government Organization Committee. From 1778 until his death on September 23, 1789, he held the office of Chancellor of Maryland .
