He is the author of the book What is a chess composition? (Russian Shto takoje schachmatnaja komposizija?, Moscow 1951). This book was translated into German by Werner Speckmann and was published in 1961: Schachkompositionen. A comparison between problem, study and batch by EI Umnow .

The Umnow theme named after him calls for the occupation of a field that has just been left by an opposing figure; according to a narrower definition, the theme is only fulfilled when white enters a field that has just been left by black. The Umnow defense is based on this, in which Black fends off a threat by moving a stone onto the threatening field.
