Jim Cooper (* 1951 in Chicago ) is an American jazz - vibraphone .

Jim Cooper is a veteran of the Chicago jazz scene and comes from a musical family on Chicago's South Side . He graduated from Michigan State University ; In the 1970s he participated in free jazz experiments with a band led by the drummer Pancho Vera. In the 1980s he had a short-lived band with Buddy Rich ; then he worked with pianist Bob Dogan , with whom he formed the Jim Cooper / Bob Dogan Quintet , which played hardbop and performed frequently in Chicago clubs, as well as at the Chicago Jazz Festival . This resulted in a collaboration with Ira Sullivan , with whom he performed at the Green Mill . He was also involved in his two 1991 albums Nutville and Tough Town , which were released by Delmark Records . In 2004 his album Itchin 'to Groove was released .
Cooper played u. a. with Milt Hinton , Frank Wess , Jodie Christian , Gordon Brisker , Mark Levine , Ernie Krivda , Joe Lovano , and Ira Sullivan . He later earned a master's degree and taught at the National Institute of the Arts in Taiwan in 1997 , and later at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and Lake Michigan College. Cooper lives in Sagatuck, Missouri .

Cooper's style is heavily influenced by Bobby Hutcherson .
