Born the son of a traveling circus performer, he spent his entire childhood in the circus and discovered his interest in the theater. In 1966 he graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. Later he became interested in experimental theater.

While working on the musical Hair , which he directed in 1970, he met Brian Thomson, who became his set designer. Some time later he was working on Jesus Christ Superstar and caught the attention of writer Tim Rice . It was he who suggested Sharman and Thomson come with him to London to bring the musical to a big stage. One of the actors in Jesus Christ Superstar was Richard O'Brien , who later played the role of Riff Raff on the Rocky Horror Picture Show , as well as contributed the script, some lyrics and the music.
