Shock Treatment is a 1981 musical directed by Richard O'Brien and is a sequel to The Rocky Horror Picture Show , although not its direct sequel. Some characters from the previous movie were played by new actors, while some actors from the previous film were given new roles in Shock Treatment . Brad Majors and Janet Majors, the main characters from the previous film, will be portrayed by new actors.

The film was shown six years after the Rocky Horror Picture Show and did not receive the same amount of attention as its predecessor. However, due to its many connections to it, it is considered a cult curiosity.

action

Brad and Janet, who are now married, are returning to their hometown Denton, which has been converted into a film studio by the FFFF company so that most of the citizens are film people and the rest of the audience ( DENTON ). While Janet is enjoying film life, Brad is not interested, which is why she accepts the offer of the blind Austrian presenter Bert Schnick to send Brad for therapy from Denton. Brad says everything is fine with him ( Bitching in the Kitchen ). Nevertheless, he is taken to the siblings Cosmo and Nation McKinley, who secretly give him an injection and convince Janet of the need for therapy. At the same time, Janet's parents, Harry and Emmy Weiss, come to Denton to check on her and Brad. You win a quiz organized by Schnick and get permission to see the two of them and work in the studio. Meanwhile, Janet thinks she should live her own life and leave Brad, which she tells him when he is bound and gagged in a wheelchair. She is monitored by video by the anonymous head of FFFF ( In my own way ). Then Janet meets her parents, whom she tells about therapy. While Janet asks her mother for advice about Brad, Janet's father shows the audience that you have to be very tough as a man ( Thank God I'm a man ). Meanwhile, judge Oliver Wright and TV presenter Batty Happshatt decide to save Brad, because they sympathize with him and are afraid for the relationship between him and Janet. Later with Janet: Cosmo, Nation and Bert introduce her to a man who should suit her better. It's the head of Denton, a smart cigar smoker named Farley Flavors ( Farley's Song ) (it turns out that "FFFF" is the abbreviation for "Farley Flavor's Faith Factory"). Janet decides to join Farley. The next night Wright and Hapshatt arrive in the madhouse, but fall asleep there like the rest of the residents ( Lullaby ).

The next day, Janet wants to show the audience the "girl of the next door" ( Me of Me ) in a black dress that Cosmo sews for her ( Little black dress ). Eventually, Janet, Bert, Cosmo, Nation, Emmy, and Harry come to Brad to show him the dress when Harry is concerned that Janet is cheating on Brad with Farley. Then Cosmo pulls the couple over to Denton's side, and it is also shown that Bert is only playing the blind man ( Shock Treatment ). As the community leaves the room, Brad has nightmares the following night in which Janet leaves him in search of fashion ( I'm looking for trade - the lyrics of the song make it very clear that she is in fact prostituting herself). The next day, Farley wants to show the audience Janet, as his girlfriend, what he's opening up with a rock band. The McKingley's, but also Emmy and Harry are preparing ( Look what i did to my id ). During the band's song ( Breaking Out ), Betty discovers that Farley and Brad are twins who grew up with different foster parents after their parents passed away. Brad was given a life of (modest) prosperity, while Farley grew up in poverty. For this, Farley now wants to take revenge by locking Brad up and taking his wife (Janet) out of him. At the same time, Janet discovers that the McKingley's are just actors. Betty and Oliver can free Brad. Before the eyes of Janet and the audience, a confrontation ensues in which Farley and Brad expose their family relationship and berate each other in a delusional delusion of Farley ( Duel Duet ). Brad, Janet, Betty and Oliver are then locked up while all the movie people and viewers run backstage to celebrate (and of their own free will get locked into the madhouse as the entire studio turns out to be). Since the policeman who is supposed to guard her cell runs along with her, the four of them escape and, with the help of the rock band from Denton ( Anyhow, Anyhow ), escape .

  • Barry Bostwick could not resume his role as Brad Majors due to other commitments. Tim Curry was offered his role as Brad, but he withdrew from the project because he did not feel comfortable with the American accent. Susan Sarandon did not return as Janet, as she could not agree on her fee.
  • Richard O'Brien , Patricia Quinn , Nell Campbell , Charles Gray , Imogen Claire , Perry Bedden , Rufus Collins and Jeremy Newson are the remaining actors from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but only Jeremy Newson returns to his old role from the previous film ( "Ralph Hapschatt"). • A first working idea was that Dr. Frank-N-Furter rises from the dead and comes to Denton to meet Janet, who is pregnant by him. He was supposed to transform the townspeople into a new cult of the Transylvanians and Riff-Raff and Magenta were supposed to return to kidnap Janet's baby and destroy Frank again. The idea was discarded because Tim Curry refused to play.
  • Originally titled The Brad and Janet Show with a similar plot and songs, the storyline was rewritten because of a strike that made outdoor filming impossible. Producer James Goldstone on the film: It's not a sequel (sequel), it's not a prequel (previous film), it's an equal.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films means: "Musical by the" Rocky Horror "team with satirical attacks on the" American way of life "and the power of the media. Not as lively and fast-paced as its predecessor, the film still offers acceptable entertainment for rock fans. "
