Jimeta is a city in northern Nigeria in the state of Adamawa and belongs to the twin city of Yola-Jimeta. The older of the two cities - Yola - is about nine kilometers further south. The 1991 census showed that Jimeta had 141,000 residents. The two cities were merged in 1935 under the administration of the Fulani , but Jimeta was given back its independence status with its own city administration in 1955.
Jimeta has an important river port on the Benue , which carries enough water in the rainy season (mid-July to mid-October) to enable deep-going boats to make their way down to Niger for export . These boats mainly transport raw peanuts and cotton from Cameroon as well as hides and hides from the immediate hinterland. Short-distance trade occurs on the waterways mainly in food and cattle.
