Jimmy Murphy (soccer player)
James Patrick "Jimmy" Murphy (born August 8, 1910 in Glamorgan , † November 14, 1989 in Manchester ) was a Welsh football coach and football player .
Career
Murphy was a player for the Welsh national team in the 1930s. He was active for West Bromwich Albion over 300 times .
Murphy was Sir Matt Busby's assistant at Manchester United and from February 6, 1958 to August 1958, interim coach after Busby was seriously injured in the Munich plane crash . He was assistant coach to Wilf McGuinness and Matt Busby until 1971 . The Welshman had his greatest success in 1958 when he traveled to Sweden as coach of the Welsh team for the 1958 World Cup . This qualification was the only one of a Welsh selection for a major tournament until the European Football Championship in 2016 . Wales were eliminated in the quarter-finals after losing 1-0 to Brazil . Previously, a win against Hungary and two draws against Sweden and Mexico had been recorded.
Murphy died in 1989 at the age of 79.
