James Chadwick "Jimmy" Townley (born May 2, 1902 in Blackburn , † February 3, 1983 in Thun ) was an English football player and coach.

Career

Townley was born in Blackburn as the son of the English international William Townley and grew up largely in Germany due to his father's coaching profession. In the early 1920s he also played under his father at SC Victoria Hamburg and later at FC St. Gallen before he returned to England in 1924 and, after failing in the trial training at Chelsea , finally signed a professional contract with Tottenham Hotspur in March 1925 received. Thrown back by a broken leg in October 1925, he made his first division debut on October 1, 1927 in a 3-1 home defeat against Everton FC . Although he stood out both against Everton and in the following week at 1: 2 against Cardiff City as the only goalscorer of his team, he was replaced by Jack Elkes and played again for the reserve team. After another use towards the end of the season and participation in a number of friendly games in the Netherlands, he moved to the third division Brighton & Hove Albion during the break of the season for the substantial transfer fee of £ 600 .

At the beginning of the season he was still a regular at Brighton, he lost it after seven matchdays to Jimmy Hopkins , who had recovered from an injury, and subsequently played no role. Until his move to league rivals Clapton Orient in February 1930, he came only to two more league appearances. Even with Clapton he could not establish himself permanently and was released from his contract in May 1931 after 19 league games, whereupon he returned to Switzerland. There he was active for six years at FC Bern until the end of 1937 , with whom he competed as team captain in the 1936 Mitropa Cup .

From 1945 to 1949 he was coach of FC St. Gallen in the National League B , in the season 1948/49 he led the club to promotion to the National League A . He then looked after FC Thun until February 1950 , which was relegated from National League B at the end of the season.
