Jimmy Woods

Jimmy Woods (born October 29, 1934 in St. Louis , Missouri , † March 29, 2018 in Anchorage , Alaska ) was an American alto and tenor saxophonist of West Coast jazz .

Life

Little is known of Woods' life. He made a name for himself primarily with two albums that he recorded for the Contemporary label in Los Angeles between 1961 and 1963 : the first, Awakening , in 1961/62 with trumpeter Joe Gordon , and the second, Conflict , in March 1963 with Carmell Jones , Andrew Hill , George Tucker and Elvin Jones .

His career began in 1951 in Homer Carter's band . After a time as a soldier in the United States Air Force (1952-1956) he worked for other bands, for example for Roy Milton . He played in 1960 for Horace Tapscott and in the band of Teddy Edwards ( Back to Avalon ); In 1961 he recorded with Joe Gordon's Quartet ( Lookin 'Good ). He was a member of Gerald Wilson's orchestra around 1963 . Between 1964 and 1965 he worked at Chico Hamilton ( The Dealer ). He has also appeared on several television shows in the USA, as well as at the legendary Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. In Europe and Japan he was seen on small tours. Almost nothing has been heard from him since the late 1960s.

He died on March 29, 2018 at the age of 83 in Anchorage.
