Jitzchak Levanon (* ~ 1944 in Lebanon ) is a retired Israeli diplomat .

Life

Levanon's mother was arrested and sentenced to death in Lebanon in 1961 on charges of espionage . In 1967 she was released as part of a prisoner exchange after the Six Day War .

Levanon later entered the diplomatic service of the Israeli Foreign Ministry. During his career he worked for the Israeli mission at the United Nations in New York City , then went to Venezuela and Colombia , spent five years in Paris and five years in Canada . Levanon next became Israeli Consul General in Boston and finally Israel's permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva , where he also represents Israel at the WTO . After working in Geneva, Levanon was moved to Cairowhere he became the new Israeli ambassador to Egypt . When the Israeli embassy was stormed after almost two weeks of protests in September 2011, Levanon and the embassy staff present there were evacuated by Egyptian security forces and then flew to Israel. In November Levanon returned briefly to Cairo.
