João Ribeiro , actually João Batista Ribeiro de Andrade Fernandes (born June 24, 1860 in Laranjeiras , Sergipe , † April 13, 1934 ) was a Brazilian writer and painter.

Since Ribeiro's father died early, he grew up in his grandfather's wealthy family. He studied medicine at the University of Salvador da Bahia , but broke off this course and switched to engineering at the University of Rio de Janeiro . There he changed his subject again. He began to study law and was then able to successfully complete it in 1894.

During this time, Ribeiro was already working as a secretary at his country's national library. In the spring of 1895 he went on a long study trip to Europe. The most important stops on this trip for Ribeiro were Paris , Rome and Berlin . He returned to Brazil in the spring of the following year. During this trip Ribeiro discovered painting for himself. Initially just a pastime, it culminated in a remarkable exhibition in Rio de Janeiro in 1900.

As a freelancer, Ribeiro wrote for various newspapers and magazines in Brazil and Portugal; u. a. for "Imparcial" and "Jornal". The focus of his publications was almost exclusively on subjects of literature and art.

As the successor to the late Luís Caetano Pereira Guimarães , Ribeiro was accepted into the Academia Brasileira de Letras in 1898 .
