Life

Simões Lopes Neto belonged to the aristocratic upper class of Pelotas. He was born on the Estância of his grandfather João Simões Lopes Filho, the Visconde da Graça. Until 1876 he lived on his country estate outside the city. His education was initially self-taught, in 1878 he went to Rio de Janeiro to visit the Colégio Abílio there. He is then said to have studied medicine for three years. However, documents to prove this are missing. When he returned to Rio Grande do Sul, he settled permanently in his hometown of Pelotas, at that time a prosperous economic center, especially through the more than 50 charqueadas (jerky meat factories) to which the city owed its wealth. On May 5, 1892, he married the 19-year-old Francisca de Paula Meireles Leite, called "Dona Velha". Since the marriage remained childless, they adopted a girl, Fermina de Oliveira Lopes, born in 1896. In Pelotas, he held numerous professional activities and tried a few projects, but all of them failed. He founded a glassworks, a schnapps distillery, a cigarette factory, a coffee roasting company, and finally a mining company, then he worked for ten years in the Alfândega (Port Customs), at times he was also a notary, secretary of the city council, teacher at a school, and also a lawyer National Guard officer. As a journalist, he wrote for the newspaper A Opinião Pública and ran the newspaper O Correio Mercantil . He died at the age of 51 from a ruptured stomach ulcer.
