Joël Mergui (born February 25, 1958 in Meknes , Morocco ) is a French doctor and Jewish functionary. He is currently President of the Consistoire central israélite (CCI).

Life

Mergui studied medicine and received his PhD from Paris V University in 1982 . He works as a dermatologist in the 13th arrondissement in Paris. On April 14, 2006, Mergui was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

Mergui has been President of the Consistoire central israélite (CCI) since 2008. Two candidates were available for the election to the Consistoire central israélite at the time: Mergui as President of the Consistoire Paris and Zwi Ammar , President of the Consistoire Marseille; both were vice-presidents of the Consistoire central. Paris and Marseille are considered to be the two largest Jewish communities in France. Mergui won the 2008 election and was re-elected in 2012.

On March 6, 2012 , the then French President Nicolas Sarkozy appointed him an associate member (“personnalité associée”) of the Conseil économique, social et environnemental (CES) for the areas of social affairs and health for a term of two years .

After the hostage-taking at the Porte de Vincennes on January 9, 2015, Mergui and the Chief Rabbi held the ceremony in the Great Synagogue in Paris for the murdered Jews. Previously, in his role as President of the CCI, Mergui had received US Secretary of State John Kerry and French Secretary of State Laurent Fabius .
