Jo Jong-rae (also Jo Jung-rae or Jo Jong-nae; born August 17, 1943 in Sunch'ŏn , South Chŏlla Province ) is a South Korean writer .
Life
Jo Jong-rae was born in Sŏnam Temple in South Chŏlla Province . When he was five years old, the Korean War broke out and his family fled south. Jo became interested in writing at an early age and won first prize in a writing competition at school. He later studied Korean Studies at Dongguk University in Seoul .
In 1970 he made his debut as a writer with the short story Verruf , which was published in the June issue of the literary magazine Modern Literature (Hyŏndae munhak), and in December of the same year a teacher's travelogue appeared .
In 2013 he was a professor at the Institute of Korean Language and Literature at Dongguk University.
One of his best-known works is the multi-volume novel Das Taebaek Gebirge , which was also made into a film in 1994 (director: Im Kwon-taek ).
