Joachim Gottlieb Schwabe (* November 11th July / November 22nd  1754 greg. In Kosch ; † January 21st July / February 1st  1800 greg. In Sankt Katharinen ) was a German Baltic pastor and calendar writer.

Pastor

Joachim Gottlieb Schwabe was born in Estonia as the son of a pastor . He attended high school in Narva and Tallinn (Reval). From 1774 to 1778 he studied theology at the University of Jena . Schwabe then worked as a pastor and theologian until the end of his life: 1780 to 1783 in Nissi , 1783 to 1796 in Lihula (Leal) and 1796 to 1800 in Kadrina.

Estophil

Schwabe's concern was in particular to improve the level of education of Estonian farmers. He appeared primarily as a poet in the Estonian language and as a calendar writer. From 1795 to 1797 and 1799 Schwabe was editor of the influential Eesti-Ma Rahwa calendar . The three poems Laul (1795), Lapse uinutamisse Laul (1796) and Kewwade laulda (1797) were widely used. The latter is probably the first Estonian-language natural poem to appear in print.

In 1832 Heinrich Rosenplänter reprinted the poem Laul , this time under the German heading The Satisfied Farmer . Schwabe's poem Eestimaa tallomehhe laul also appeared posthumously, denouncing the oppression of the indigenous rural population.
