Joachim Mähnert

Joachim Mähnert (born June 12, 1967 in Berlin ) is a German historian.

Life

Mähnert studied first at the FU, later also at the HU Berlin, a. a. Chemistry and history, which he completed with a diploma or Magister Artium. The doctorate took place in 1994 with Helmut Baumgärtel and Karl-Michael Weitzel on studies on Van der Waals clusters and unimolecular reactions at the Berlin synchrotron ring BESSY . Until 1995 Mähnert worked as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the Free University of Berlin . From 1996 to 2008 Mähnert worked as a scientific and museum educational employee in the open-air museum Domain Dahlem , since 1998 as deputy museum director, where he was responsible for various special exhibitions. Since 2009 he has been the director of the East Prussian State Museum . Before moving to Lüneburg, Mähnert had several teaching positions in the museum studies course at the FHTW Berlin.

During his time as director of the East Prussian State Museum, Mähnert undertook the fundamental revision of the permanent exhibition and the expansion of the museum by building new buildings and integrating several listed buildings into the museum complex. This also includes the addition of a Baltic German department and the Lüneburg Brewery Museum. Exhibitions took place in Lüneburg a. a. on the Prussian Queen Luise , “Splendor and misery. Manors in the Baltic States ”(with catalog) and“ Everything burned. Jewish life and its destruction in the Prussian provinces of Hanover and East Prussia ”(with catalog). Numerous other exhibitions of the museum could be seen in what is now Polish, Russian and Lithuanian part of the former East Prussia. The museum is currently aiming for a further construction phase for a permanent exhibition on Immanuel Kant .

On the occasion of an official visit to the new Baltic German Department by the President of the Republic of Latvia, Raimonds Vējonis , Mähnert awarded the three-star medal of the Republic of Latvia in February 2019 .
