Joachim Thiery (born August 20, 1952 in St. Wendel ) is a German specialist in laboratory medicine and, as a university professor, heads the Institute for Laboratory Medicine , Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics at the University of Leipzig .

Life

Joachim Thiery studied human medicine from 1973 to 1979 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1981. Joachim Thiery did his military service (1980–1981) as a flight physician in Jever, after which he worked until 1989 as a research assistant in the Clinical Chemistry Department of the Center for Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Göttingen . In 1989, Joachim Thiery moved to the Institute for Clinical Chemistry at the Grosshadern University Hospital as a research assistant, and from 1994 worked there as a senior physician. In 1995 he completed his habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . From 1995 to 1996 Joachim Thiery was a visiting scientist at the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases at UCSF San Francisco. In 2000, Joachim Thiery accepted the chair for laboratory medicine at the University of Leipzig , where he has headed the institute for laboratory medicine , clinical chemistry and molecular diagnostics to this day. In 2011 he completed the postgraduate course in Health Care Management at the University of Bayreuth with an MBA.

Offices

Joachim Thiery was Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig from 2008 to 2013 and President of the German United Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine from 2012 to 2013 . In 2001 and 2009 he was conference president of the annual meetings of the DGKL. From 2004 to 2012 he represented the interests of clinical chemistry / pathobiochemistry as an elected member of the German Research Foundation (DFG) Medical College.

Scientific work

The scientific focus of Joachim Thiery is on the field of lipid metabolism and the pathophysiology of lipids in cardiovascular diseases, especially arteriosclerosis. His work covers a broad methodological spectrum, ranging from experimental studies to the development of new biomarkers, especially using mass spectrometry, to clinical studies. In doing so, he researches the genetic causes of arteriosclerosis and lipid metabolism, carries out metabolome analyzes and genome-wide association studies in metabolic and vascular diseases, and develops therapy concepts and biomarkers for the prevention of vascular diseases and lipid metabolism disorders.

Joachim Thiery was instrumental in establishing the “Leipzig Research Center for Civilization Diseases” (LIFE), a major research project at the University of Leipzig. He is on the board of the LIFE science network, which is on the trail of the causes of important common diseases. These include in particular vascular diseases and heart attacks, diabetes mellitus and obesity, depression and dementia, head and neck tumors, allergies and metabolic disorders and inflammation of the pancreas. In this large epidemiological joint study, around 26,500 people from Leipzig - children and adults - will be examined clinically, by laboratory medicine and bioanalytically and asked about their personal living conditions. His scientific achievements have given him a top position in German laboratory medicine.

social commitment

Joachim Thiery was a close friend and personal physician of Wolfgang Wagner , the long-time director of the Bayreuth Festival and grandson of Richard Wagner . In a much-noticed funeral speech, Thiery paid tribute to the life's work of the great opera director as part of the funeral service in the Bayreuth Festival Hall on the Green Hill on April 11, 2010. Together with Ulrich Tröhler, Joachim Thiery published the article Doubt on the Belief in Progress in the 1987 Bayreuth Festival's program booklet II Parsifal . The animal experiment opponent Richard Wagner: His criticism of the times and the reaction of his time and together with Dietrich Seidel in the series MMW Originalia - Life picture of the Munich Medical Weekly on the occasion of Wolfgang Wagner's 75th birthday the article I don't feel comfortable - Richard Wagner and his doctors .
