Joan Fontcuberta i Villà (* 1955 in Barcelona , Spain ) is a Catalan artist, teacher, author and curator who specializes in photography . He gained particular attention through his works Fauna and Sputnik , in which he criticized the veracity of photography.

biography

In 1977 he finished his studies in communication sciences at the UAB-Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona . Like much of his family, he began working in advertising. Between 1979 and 1986 he worked as a professor and taught at the UB-Universidad de Barcelona . After that he earned his living with his art.

In 1980 he was a founding member of the English and Spanish language magazine PhotoVision and has been editor there until now. Since 1993, Joan Fontcuberta has been teaching audiovisual communication at the UPF Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He was also visiting professor at Harvard University in 2003 .

In 1996 he also worked as "Artistic Director" at the Rencontres d'Arles photography festival in France . In 2015 he was artistic director of the Mois de la Photo à Montréal, whose program he developed under the motto La condition post-photographique .

In 1988 he was awarded the David Octavius ​​Hill Medal of the Photographic Academy GDL (former Society of German Photographers , now the German Photographic Academy ), combined with the art prize of the city of Leinfelden-Echterdingen .

In 2013 he received the Hasselblad Award from the Hasselblad Foundation Gothenburg.
