life and work

Granados i Llimona was born at a time when the political changes in Spain were already on the horizon. Granados i Llimona was a grandson of the composer and pianist Enrique Granados on his father's side and of the painter Joan Llimona i Bruguera on his mother's side . His father was Víctor Granados, one of the six children of Enrique Granados. His mother was Isabel Llimona i de Gisbert, daughter from Joan Llimona's first marriage to Pilar de Gisbert. His mother died at the age of 3. The father went to America after the death of his wife. Joan and his siblings were brought to relatives in the Garrotxa, first in Sant Feliu de Pallerols and a few months later in Sant Joan les Fonts.

As a boy, Joan learned various painting and drawing techniques from his aunt, the Catalan painter Núria Llimona i Raymat , in Barcelona. In 1939, after the Spanish Civil War , his family and young Joan went into exile in France for more than a year for security reasons. Granados Llimona then went to Barcelona to study with the Salesians and trained in trade. In 1947, at the age of 16, he joined a bank in Olot. Then worked as a civil servant for the city of Olot until he retired.

Granados i Llimona became interested in art from an early age. In particular, he was gifted at drawing. From 1947 he took drawing lessons from Martí Casadevall in Olot. For his drawings he studied landscapes, people and human anatomy. From 1949 to 1951 he took lessons in the studios of several artists in Barcelona and Olot. He completed this phase of training with the title Graduat en Arts Aplicadas (graduation in applied arts) at the Llotja of Barcelona. He enjoyed creating large-format works as well as wall drawings, such as at the Castanyer school in his long-term home in Sant Joan les Fonts. Granados i Llimona was one of those Catalan artists who saw drawing as a fully fledged art. In his opinion, drawing was in no way subordinate to painting. His work reveals, on the one hand, a great joy in the art of drawing and, on the other hand, in outstanding, autonomous drawing technology. His excellent, personal, artistic style has often been highlighted by art critics.
