Joan Manén y Planas (born May 14, 1883 in Barcelona , † June 26, 1971 in Barcelona) was a Spanish ( Catalan ) classical violin player and composer .

In his childhood, Manén learned to play the piano so quickly that his father assumed he was the makings of a child prodigy . But instead of piano he studied violin with Clemente Ibarguren, with which he made so rapid progress that his compatriot, the violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate , noticed him and invited him on a tour to Germany while still a young man.

He later drew attention to himself as a composer. which made him better known in Germany, where he spent long periods of his life, than in Spain. A selection of his works included the operas Giovanni di Napoli (1903), Der Fackeltanz (1909) and Neró i Acté (1928) with his own libretto ; the poetic symphony Nova Catalonia and three violin concertos. In addition "Fantasia - Sonata" for a guitar; a suite for violin and piano; a piano quartet; a string quartet and several successful miniatures for violin and orchestra. Also completed Manen the Violin Concert in C by Ludwig van Beethoven , which in the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna is only handwritten and fragmented with only 259 bar lines.
