Joanna Shimkus

Joanna Shimkus (born October 30, 1943 in Halifax , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian actress .

Life

The daughter of a Lithuanian and an Irish woman was born in Halifax . She went to a convent school in Montréal and at the age of 19 to Paris , where she worked as a model. In 1964 she made her film debut in De l'amour by Jean Aurel and then played leading roles in films by Robert Enrico (Ho , Tante Zita and Die Abenteurer ) . In 1968 she starred in Joseph Losey's Surf alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton .

A crisis at Universal Studios resulted in the cancellation of their non-exclusive contract. After that she turned very little (e.g. The Virgin and the Gypsy) and married her colleague Sidney Poitier , whom she met in 1968 while filming The Lost Man . After her last film for a long time, Das Pariser Appartement (1971), she made a comeback in 2010 as Boss in Yard Sale , a film by her daughter Anika Poitier.
