Joaquín Cortés (real: Joaquín Pedraja Reyes Cortés) (born February 22, 1969 in Córdoba , Spain ) is a Spanish dancer from a Gitano family.

His grandfather brought him to Madrid when he was eight. Uncle Cristóbal Reyes, himself a flamenco virtuoso, helped him get a classical education. At 14 he was accepted into the Ballet Nacional de España , with which he performed in the Metropolitan House in New York and in the Kremlin in Moscow. At 16 he became the company's solo dancer for the next three years. In 1988 he left the Spanish National Ballet and accepted invitations to the Champs Elysée Theater in Paris alongside Maja Michailowna Plissezkaja or Sylvie Guillem and Peter Schmalfuss . At the same time he choreographed the opera ' Carmen ' in the Arena of Verona (Italy) and performed at the ' Summer Flamenco Festival ' in Tokyo (Japan) and the annual Lincoln Center's Gala in New York (USA).

In 1992 he founded his own ballet company, the Joaquín Cortés Flamenco Ballet .

His style is a mix of flamenco with ballet and modern dance. He juggles classic pirouettes and traditional flamenco steps as well as swapping male and female roles. Purists criticize too much show and betrayal of centuries-old traditions. But with perfect dance technique (and free, toned upper body until around 2010), powerful singers and, in addition to the guitars and drums ( cajónes ), jazzy tones of flutes, violin, double bass and Pino Sagliocco, Spain's most successful manager, at his side himself as a representative of a new flamenco of the 21st century.

Film, television and guest appearances

He became known to a wider audience through his guest appearances with Jennifer Lopez and Alicia Keys . Movie buffs can u. a. in the film noir Gitano (2000) with Laetitia Casta directed by Manuel Palacios, Pedro Almodóvar's film Mein Blooming Secret (1995) and Vanilla and Chocolate (Vaniglia e Cioccolato) with Maria Grazia Cucinotta and the Italian director Ciro Ippolito (2003) . Flamenco fans noticed him in Carlos Saura's film 'Flamenco', which showed current flamenco stars dancing a farruca .

In 2004 he appeared in front of the former US President George W. Bush and his wife Laura Bush with a quintet flamenco musician in the East Room of the White House. In 2011 he made an appearance at the Hispanic Heritage (HHAS) Awards ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, USA, which was also attended by former First Lady Michelle Obama.

In 2014 he took part as a juror in the first talent show on Italian television ('Forte, Forte, Forte', RAI 1, with Raffaella Carra) and on Portuguese television (SIC).

Joaquín Cortés also provided the template for the antagonist “Vamp” in the game Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for the PlayStation 2 (2007), which is expressed through many dance movements.

Political engagement and charity

In 2006 he performed in Venice for the construction of a children's hospital in Haiti. In the same year he was appointed ambassador for Sinti and Roma to the EU Parliament in Brussels, gave a speech in front of the EU Parliament and had a conversation with the former Commission President Barroso . In 2010 he was named a climate ambassador by US Vice President Al Gore , which is a commitment to disseminate the knowledge. He was named an Artist for Peace by UNESCO.

In December 2004 he was the protagonist of the TV campaign for "Freddy", a manufacturer of sports fashion. In 2006 he produced commercials for a European and South American advertising campaign for Samsonite as well as for Seat and Rondel (sparkling wine). He has been marketing perfumes for men and women since 2006 (Yekipe, 24K, Night Show).

Condemnation

In 2010 he was sentenced to probation for embezzling € 700,000 from a South American businessman for opening a flamenco venue.

Family and relationship

Since April 2008 he has a son (Samuel) with his personal assistant Katie Asumu, whom he initially refused to recognize after the separation. In December 2008 his mother, Basilia Reyes Flores, died after a serious illness. His father is called Pascual Cortés. Until 2015 Joaquín lived with his sisters (including Mariana) and nephews of seven on two floors of 240 m² in a house in Madrid on the ' Tirso de Molina ' square . His uncle is the flamenco dancer and choreographer Cristóbal Reyes (* 1949). Two cousins ​​are Antonio and Manuel Reyes. The entire family consists of around 200 people in southern Spain.

He has been in a relationship with Mónica Moreno since 2010.
