Jochen Berger

Jochen Berger (born July 19, 1946 in Hildburghausen ; † July 26, 2010 in Mainz ) was a German rally co-driver .

Berger was the first German professional co-driver in rallying. From 1972 he drove alongside Walter Röhrl as a navigator ; the two achieved their greatest success together in 1975 when they won the Acropolis Rally . In 1974 Berger became European rally champion together with Röhrl and received the ONS Cup . Berger drove rallies as a co-driver until 1976 and, together with Röhrl, achieved fourth place behind three Lancia Stratos HFs in an Opel Kadett GT / E at the Monte Carlo Rally , before he was replaced by Christian Geistdörfer . In 1976 Berger moved to the Opel motorsport department as head of the department , where he was also responsible for promoting young talent. As team manager, he played a major role in Walter Röhrl's World Cup victory in 1982. Later Berger moved to the technical development center at Opel. In 2006 Berger retired and devoted himself entirely to his hobbies: looking after classic cars and participating in classic car rallies.

Berger died on July 26, 2010 in the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz after a long and serious illness.
