Jochen Plate

Jochen Plate (born June 2, 1963 ) is a former judoka from the Federal Republic of Germany. He was third in the 1987 World Cup.

Athletic career

Jochen Plate competed in the heavyweight division or in the open class. In 1981 he was third in the heavyweight division of the Junior European Championships, in 1982 he won the title. In 1984 Plate won a bronze medal in the open class at the Student World Championships. The following year he also won a bronze medal in the open class at the 1985 Summer Universiade in Kobe. At the German Championships in 1985, Plate reached the heavyweight final, but lost to Alexander von der Groeben . In 1986 he finished seventh at the European Championships . At the German Championships in 1986, Plate won the heavyweight division. In 1987, Plate won bronze in the open class at the European Championships in Paris. In November 1987 at the 1987 World Championships in Essen, Plate was subject to the Egyptian Mohamed Ali Rashwan in the quarterfinals of the heavyweight competition . With victories in the hoping round over the Dutchman Hans Buiting and the Bulgarian Dimitar Saprjanow, Plate won a bronze medal.

In 1988 Plate lost the final of the German Championships against Alexander von der Groeben. In 1988 he won a bronze medal at the student world championships. In 1990 Plate finished fifth at the European Championships in Frankfurt am Main. At the German Championships in 1990 he was defeated in the final by the GDR champion Henry Stöhr . In 1991, Plate won the German Open, and at the German Championships in 1991, he finished second again.

After his judo career, Palte switched to sumo . In this sport he was German champion in 1995 and European champion in 1996.
