Joe Gardner

Joseph "Joe" Gardner (born November 11, 1943 , † February 25, 2002 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter and arranger .

Gardner graduated from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1966 . He was best known in Europe through his membership in Charles Mingus' band in the early 1970s, with whom he also performed at festivals such as the Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw and at the Berlin Jazz Days in 1972 . He can also be heard on the live recording Jazz in Detroit / Strata Concert Gallery / 46 Selden from 1973. Gardner also worked with Paul Jeffrey ( Family , 1972), Sonelius Smith , Cecil McBee / Chico Freeman and in Frank Foster's big band ( Shiny Stockings , 1977), as arranger and orchestral conductor for pop singer Jerry Vale . Gardner was involved in a total of 15 recordings between 1972 and 1990.
