Joe McGhee

Joe McGhee (actually Joseph McGhee; born July 9, 1929 in Camelon , Scotland , † April 17, 2015 in Edinburgh ) was a British marathon runner .

At the Polytechnic Marathon in 1952, he came in 16th place. The following year he was third in the Scottish Championships and sixth in the Welsh Open Championships. In 1954 he became Scottish Champion in 2:35:22 h. Starting for Scotland , he won the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver in 2:39:36 h; however, his triumph was overshadowed by the drama of favorite Jim Peters , who collapsed dehydrated 200 meters from the finish after running out a 17-minute lead.

In 1955 McGhee defended his championship title with the Scottish record of 2:25:50 h. Also in 1956 he was Scottish champion.

Joe McGhee graduated from the University of Glasgow and then worked as an English teacher and lieutenant pilot with the Royal Air Force .
