Joe Sullivan (Trumpeter)

Joseph Leo "Joe" Sullivan (* 1958 in Timmins , Ontario ) is a Canadian jazz trumpeter , arranger , composer and university teacher.

Sullivan comes from a French Canadian family and first played the piano before switching to the trumpet at the age of 15. He received his Bachelor of Arts in classical trumpet playing from the University of Ottawa in 1981 ; He then studied jazz at the Berklee School of Music and with John Medeski at the New England Conservatory , where he graduated in 1987 with a Masters in Jazz. Medeski then took part in his 1994 debut album, A Song for Jersey (Blue Loon). Sullivan also worked with his sextet and his own big band , with which he recorded the album Northern Ontario Suite (Effendi, 2010). As a soloist, he played with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Orchester symphonique de Montréal , as well as with Don Thompson , Lorne Lofsky , Kirk MacDonald , John Medeski, Pat LaBarbera , Alain Caron , George Garzone and Ranee Lee . He directs the McGill Chamber Jazz Ensemble and teaches jazz composition, arrangement and trumpet as an Associate Professor at McGill University in Montréal .

Prizes and awards

Sullivan was honored with the "Prix Socan" at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in 1991 and with the "Prix DuMaurier" in 1997 with the Joel Miller Group.
