Kirk MacDonald

Kirk (Arthur) MacDonald (born October 2, 1959 in Sydney (Nova Scotia) ) is a Canadian jazz saxophonist.

MacDonald started playing the saxophone at the age of ten. He had lessons with Bill Loeb in his hometown from 1969 to 1971 and then studied saxophone, clarinet, flute, music theory and composition with Terry Hill in the high school music program . From 1973 to 1975 he studied classical saxophone with Bruce MacKinley .

After attending summer courses at Berklee College of Music in Boston, he took private saxophone, flute and improvisation lessons with Don Palmer until 1977 . From 1977 he attended Humber College in Toronto and also took private lessons with Pat LaBarbera . In the early 1980s he was a student of George Coleman and Lee Konitz in New York .

MacDonald taught saxophone at Ottawa University (1987-91), McGill University (1988-89) and Carleton University (1989-92 and 1996-98). Since 1993 he has taught saxophone, improvisation, ensemble playing and ear training at the University of Toronto .

He has worked as a sideman with musicians such as Claude Ranger , Dave Young , Sonny Greenwich , Kenny Wheeler , Eddie Henderson , Harold Mabern , Walter Bishop Jr. , Bob Mover , Pat LaBarbera, Phil Woods , John Taylor and Ron McClure . He belonged to different bands; in the 1980s he led a quartet with Lorne Lofsky . He later led his own quartet.

Since 1999 he has been nominated for the Juno Award several times as an ensemble musician and soloist ; In 2004 he was the winner of the 4th Concours International de Soliste de Jazz . He worked on more than 25 recordings and made several albums under his own name.
