Johan Andersson (born September 29, 1820 in Ödestugu , † June 14, 1894 in Växjö ) was a Swedish Evangelical Lutheran bishop and literary translator.

Life

Johan Andersson was born to Anders Anderson and his wife Eva Sofia Svalander in the historic province of Småland in southern Sweden. His father was a village pastor in Åker in the diocese of Växjö . He married Elisabeth (Elise) Lindfors in 1850. His brother was the poet and university teacher Anders Anderson (1822-1892), his son the teacher, educator and author Hilding Andersson (1853-1918).

Andersson began his studies in 1838 at Lund University , where he graduated in 1844 with a master's degree in philosophy . From 1845 to 1846 he studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1846 he got a job as a teacher of modern languages ​​at the Växjo high school. From 1849 he was a lecturer in philosophy there, and in 1853 he received the post of headmaster. In 1861 he studied the Danish and German school systems as part of a state academic program.

Then Andersson turned to theology . In 1862 he became pastor in Gränna in the historic province of Småland. In 1868 he became a member of the general synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden . In 1873 and 1878 he was a representative of the Växjo diocese at the synod. In 1873 he was appointed provost ( kontraktsprost ). In 1877 he received his doctorate in theology. In 1879 he was appointed Bishop of Växjö to succeed Henrik Gustav Hultman .

In addition to his church activities, Andersson also worked as a literary translator. He translated works by Goethe into Swedish . He first translated Faust into Swedish; the edition appeared in 1853 and received a lot of attention. Other translations followed by Götz von Berlichingen (1854), Stella (1854), Die Geschwister (1855), Clavigo (1855) and Egmont (1855).

On November 30, 1889 he received the North Star Order ( Kungliga Nordstjärneorden ) in the class of commander .
