Johan Eklund (handball player)

Johan Torsten Eklund (born February 18, 1964 in Kungsängen ) is a Swedish handball coach and former handball player .

The 1.80 m wide and active in his time 83 kg heavy Eklund was pivot player . He played in the Swedish Elitserien for Redbergslids IK , with whom he became Swedish champions in 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1989.

Johan Eklund made his debut in the Swedish national team in 1986. At the 1988 Olympic Games , he finished fifth. At the 1990 World Cup , he surprisingly beat the Soviet team in the final and became world champion. By 1991 he played 85 international matches .

From 1992 Eklund was part of the Redbergslids IK coaching team. From 2005 he was assistant coach to Magnus Wislander before he inherited him in December 2012. After the 2014/15 season he gave up the coaching position. With the Gothenburg team he won the championship in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2003. In the 2003 European Cup Winners' Cup he lost to BM Ciudad Real in the final .
