Series pastorum (list of pastors) of the Church of Hald , No. 21: Provst Gustav Johan Adolf Exner 1923-1964

Exner, a son of the painter Aage Exner (1870-1951), was parish priest from 1923 to 1964 and from 1931 also provost in Hald , about 11 km northeast of the town of Randers in the Midtjylland region in Denmark. He was married to Gunild Holt; the couple had three children: Johannes , Clara and Bent . He is buried in Hald's cemetery.

During the German occupation of Denmark he housed resistance fighters and was arrested by the Gestapo on February 18, 1945, together with his son Bent, who was active in the resistance, and abused for two weeks and then taken to the Frøslev internment camp; from there he was transferred to Sweden on April 25 by the White Buses .

Exner became known for his efforts to keep the area around the Danish village churches free of buildings and disturbing vegetation and thus to maintain a clear view of the churches and of the surrounding country from the churches. To this end, he negotiated with the owners of the adjacent properties from 1941 onwards, first in his provost's office, and then in 1949–51 with the support of the Ministry of Churches throughout the country outside of Copenhagen. Together with the responsible provost and the chairman of the regional nature conservation committee, who has to be a judge, he tried to conclude individual agreements with the landowners that were secured in the land registry, emphasizing their complete voluntariness and lack of compensation and thereby emphasizing the owners' sense of responsibility for the cultural , architectural and ecclesiastical heritage appealed. In the three years he visited all around 2100 churches outside of Copenhagen, including in the cities, and was able to conclude around 4500 agreements, called Propst-Exner maintenance agreements, that is about 90% of the negotiations he conducted. He has written and edited several books on the topic of church monument preservation.
