Johann Luzac

Life

His Huguenot ancestors came from France. His father of the same name was a book printer owner in Leyden.

After studying with Ludwig Kaspar Valckenaer and David Ruhnken , he turned down the chairs for law and Greek offered in Groningen and Leiden and instead moved to the Harz Mountains to devote himself to legal practice.

In 1772 he returned to Leiden and took part in the publication of the Leydener Zeitung founded by his uncle Stephan Luzac († 1787, originally theologian). After his death he took over the editorial office. In the years after the French Revolution, he was the most influential editor in the western world. His Gazette de Leyde (actually: Nouvelles Extraordinaires de Divers Endroits ) was the opinion-forming newspaper in Europe. In 1789 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

His second daughter, Emilie, married Wybo Fijnje .

After Valckenaer's death, he took over his chair for the Greek language and was rector of the university in 1794/95 . He also became a professor of patriotic history. However, this brought him hostility during the unrest in Holland in the 1790s , so that he gave up the chairs and the publication of his newspaper by 1800. He then devoted himself to philological studies and the editing of several writings left by his teacher Valckenaer. When calm was restored in the Netherlands in 1802, he was restored to his previous positions at the university.

Luzac died in the large explosion of a powder ship in the canal, which destroyed eight blocks and 155 people.
