Johan Nijs

Johan Nijs (born June 11, 1963 in Leuven , Belgium ) is a Belgian composer and conductor in the field of brass music .

Life

Nijs started taking saxophone lessons at the age of 10 . He first studied clarinet , saxophone, piano , accordion and harmony at the Reichs-Musikakademie in Tervuren , Belgium . At the Music Academy in St.-Pieters-Woluwe Belgium he received the government medal for clarinet and chamber music . After completing military service as a clarinetist in 1985 with a military band in Arlon , Belgium and then in 1987 with the Muziekkapell van de Luchtmacht in Evere , Belgium, he continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels . There he received first prizes, diplomas and certificates for general music theory , clarinet, transposition, harmony, wind orchestra and fanfare orchestra direction, piano and counterpoint .

Johan Nijs began to compose at an early age and has already won several national and international composition prizes. He is currently working as a composer and arranger , military musician and conductor . Since January 2003 he has directed the Royal Police Wind Orchestra of Antwerp . He also works regularly as a guest conductor.
