Johan Vibe

Johan Vibe , Johan Wibe, (born September 10, 1748 in Bragernes , † March 1782 in Copenhagen ) was a Norwegian poet. Not much is known about him, not even the exact date of his death.

Life

He began to study in 1766, but it is not certain that this happened at university or privately. He was particularly concerned with the Greek language. Knud Lyne Rahbek praised a translation of Anakreon made by Vibe , which is now lost. A translation of the Golden Verses of Pythagoras has been preserved. For a while he was tutor to the later Bishop Ole Irgens in Gudbrandsdalen . Later he appears as a leading member of "Det norske Selskab". At first he was the society's secretary and its poet. Well known is the drinking song Den, Skaberen skjænkte en oplyst Forstand (The one to whom the Creator has given a bright mind ...) and “Vingudens Gaver alt bordene pryder” (The gifts of the wine god adorns all tables). He found, the time is unknown, also a job as a surveyor in Funen . In 1778 he became chamber secretary. In the same year his play De nysgjerrige Mandfolk (The Inquisitive Men) was performed at the Royal Theater . It seems to have been successful. Nevertheless, it was only printed after Vibes' death.

Contemporaries describe him as lovable, but is said to have led a reckless life. His anacreontic drinking songs often have a melancholy undertone beneath their funny surface.

Den, Skaberen skjænkte en oplyst Forstand,
han elsker and drikker, imedens han kan:
thi naar man Først Foden hos Charon har sat,
saa siges al Elskov and Vinen god Nat.

Lad Vin da and Elskov opvarme dit Bryst,
snart røver Dig Døden al sværmende Lyst,
and blev Du end gammel, saa bliver Du dog,
hvad endnu er værre, saa bliver Du klog.

The one to whom the Creator has given a clear mind,
who loves and drinks as long as he can:
because when you first put your foot to the Charon, then
all love and wine say good night.

Let the wine and love warm
your breast . Death quickly robs you of all enthusiasm.
And if you get old, you will,
what is worse, you will become wise.

Remarks

  1. The "Chamber Secretary" had to receive the submissions to the Pension Chamber and forward them to the Chamber of Pension Court. The court had first and last jurisdiction over issues relating to royal balances and other legitimate claims and the employment relationships of the officials responsible for determining remuneration.
