Ole Irgens (bishop)
Ole Irgens (* 22. January 1724 in Surnadal ; † 15. October 1803 in Bergen ) was a Norwegian priest and bishop .
Life
Ole Irgens was the son of Vicar Johannes Irgens from the old Irgens family . After a short period of study, he began to work as a chaplain under his father . In 1756 he left him to become a ship preacher in Morocco . But after various problems he returned to Norway in 1760 to become vicar of Fåberg . In 1773 he became vicar of the Trondheim Nidaros Cathedral and provost in the diocese of Nidaros . From 1773 to 1780 Irgens was vice-president of the Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab . In 1779 he was elected bishop of Bjørgvin (Bergen) diocese . Despite his blindness, he held this office for the last five years of his life until his death in 1803.
Irgens was married to Christiane Bang, a daughter of the bishop of Nidaros Marcus Fredrik Bang , from 1761 .
