Fåberg is a village and a former independent municipality in the province ( Fylke ) Innlandet in Norway . The place in Gudbrandsdalen is 151 meters above sea level and covers an area of 0.51 km². In 2019 Fåberg had 710 inhabitants.

Location and history

In 1838 the parish Fåberg (spelling until 1921 Faaberg ) became an independent municipality . The name of the community was derived from the former vicarage Faaberg. Fåberg has been part of Lillehammer municipality since 1964 . The village is about five kilometers northwest of the city center on the Lågen river . Despite its status as a former center of an independent community, there are no social institutions such as schools or kindergartens in the village.

Fåberg is located on European route 6 , the most important north-south axis in Norway. The old Gudbrandsdalsvegen , which is now a Fylkesvei , runs through the village . The town's train station, located on the Dovrebanen , was inaugurated in 1894, but passenger traffic ceased in 1965. The station building, which has been preserved to this day, dates from 1912.

The village borders directly on the 7.1 km² Lågendelta nature reserve , which was established in October 1990. It is an important nesting and wintering area for birds and is one of the largest river deltas in Norway. To the north of Fåberg, at the foot of the Drotten, rock carvings (several elk figures) around 6000 years old were discovered in 1942 . A four-kilometer cultural path connects the petroglyphs with the Fåberg Church, built in 1727 and located in Gausdal. Near the church is the Fåberg runestone .
