The Royal Norwegian Scientific Society ( Norwegian : Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab, DKNVS) is a learned society based in Trondheim , Norway .

history

The society was founded in 1760 by Bishop Johan Ernst Gunnerus , Gerhard Schøning and council member Peter Friderich Suhm as Det Trondhiemske Selskab (The Trondheim Society) . It received royal confirmation in 1767 and with it the new name Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab (The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences (DKNVS)). Their library was founded in 1768, initially with 500 books. As the oldest academic library in Norway, it is now part of the NTNU University Library and bears the name Gunnerus Library .

Traditionally, a member of the royal family acts as the “protector” of society. Until 1815 he carried the title of "President", but the actual management was with the "Vice President".
