Johan Wilhelm Dalman (born November 4, 1787 at Gut Hinseberg, Västmanland , † July 12, 1828 ) was a Swedish doctor, professor and entomologist .

Life

Dalman received his basic training at the Kristiansfeld Institute in the Duchy of Schleswig . In 1803 he enrolled at Lund University and took his law exam two years later, intending to get a job in the Swedish Bergskollegium . Nourished by the lectures of Anders Jahan Retzius and Carl Fredrik Fallén as well as by his acquaintance with the entomologist Leonard Gyllenhaal , Dalman's interest in natural science was more strongly expressed. He changed the direction of study and received his doctorate in medicine in Uppsala in 1817 . The following year he became librarian and general manager at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . In 1819 he started teaching at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm . After he was admitted to the Academy of Sciences in 1821, he received the title of professor in 1824. In 1821 he was also elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy . Shortly before his death, he took over the supervision of professorships in the fields of botany and natural history at his institute.

Dalman is honored by a large number of scientific names for organisms, primarily fossils , such as the genus Dalmanites of the trilobite order Phacopida . He dealt with the classification of trilobites and wrote a treatise on trilobites ( Om Palaeaderna, eller de så kallade Trilobiterna , 1827), which he called Palaederna, although the name trilobites had already established itself among other scientists at his time.
